How To Feed Your Dog

What to Do with Your First Roll of Meat

  1. Thaw the Meat: Place the roll of meat in the refrigerator for 10 to 12 hours. It should still be partially frozen but soft enough to cut.

  2. Portion the Meat: Using your bags, cut the roll into pieces for your dog's needs over 2 days.

    1. Large(50# plus): 1 tablespoon

    2. Medium (20-50#): 1 teaspoon

    3. Small (5-20#): 1/2 teaspoon

  3. Prepare for Freezing: Place all the bagged portions, except the smallest one, in a two gallon freezer bag and store in the freezer.

The First Meal

  1. If Using Dry Food: Soak in hot tap water for 5 minutes, then drain.

  2. Mixing: Mix in the meat thoroughly. Optionally, mix in cooked white rice (3 parts rice to 1 part meat) to slow down digestion.

  3. Yogurt: Add plain low-fat yogurt with active cultures.

    1. Large (50# plus): 1 tablespoon

    2. Medium (20-50#): 1 teaspoon

    3. Small (5-20#): 1/2 teaspoon

  4. Transition: Gradually decrease the rice and increase the meat until at 100% meat.

Feeding Schedule

  1. Healthy Adult Dogs: Feed once a day after reaching 100% meat.

  2. Puppies: Feed on their normal schedule.

Weekly Fasting

  1. Adult Dogs: Fast once a week, giving non-weight bearing bones (necks or ribs) and fresh water.

  2. Puppies: Can fast by skipping a meal.

Bone Feeding Tips

  1. For Large Breeds/Aggressive Chewers: Large knucklebones, ends only.

  2. For Smaller Dogs: Middle bone of a lamb leg or rib bone.

  3. First Time: Remove most fat or marrow.

  4. Alternative: Feed nearly frozen large chunks of meat.

Gradual Diet Change

  1. Meat Increase: Gradually increase meat while reducing commercial dog food and/or rice.

  2. Portions: Feed 2-3% of the adult dog's body weight per day once at 100% meat.

    1. Monitor and adjust based on individual dog needs.

  3. Puppies: Keep lean, only 1/8 inch of fat over bones, but may consume more than 2-3%.

Additional Tips

  1. Separate Feeding: Feed dogs in separate bowls or crates to avoid arguments.

  2. Cleaning: Wash all utensils and bowls in hot soapy water after each meal.

  3. Monitor Needs: Dietary needs can change, adjust portions accordingly.

Following these guidelines will help ensure a smooth transition to a natural diet for your dog.
